Summer Break Suggestions
As summer is here, students are looking forward to play time.  During the long break, students often lose much of what they were taught during the year.  Under "Class Files" I have some suggestions of things to do over break to encourage out of school learning.  Enjoy!
Award's Ceremony
Our Award's Ceramony will be on Wednesday, June 16 at 9:30 AM.  Hope to see you there!

SOL Released Tests
Under "Class Links" (on the right hand side) you will find a link that will give practice SOL tests.  These are the SOL tests from previous years.  These are a great resource to help your child prepare for the upcoming SOL tests.
Template to study word study words
Students should be studying their word study words every night.  Under the "Files" section, you will find a template your child can use at home to help them study their words. Have the students write one word in each block, then cut out the words. Students should put a line under the guide words, or write it in another color. Then, the students can practice sorting their words every night. Students can draw this template on a piece of notebook paper, or you can continue to get the template off my web-site.

Open Library Night
Open Library Night is the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month.  It takes place from 5:00-7:00 PM.
Home Reading Log Sheets
Your child will receive their home reading log sheets in their Thursday Folder today.  Your child will receive two separate homework grades for this.  One will be for the total minutes read.  The second grade will be for completing all days.  If they completed and corrected all days, they will receive an "A".  If they are missing one day or did not make corrections, they will receive a "B".  And so forth.  At the bottom of each sheet, I have added the minutes for the week and put the letter grade for completion.
Vocabulary
Students do not need to know how to spell vocabulary words.  They need to know the definitions and understand what the word means and give examples of the word when possible.  An example would be knowing that migration is when animals go to another place when the weather changes.  A bird migrates south in the winter.  I have provided the vocabulary words for each unit we are currently on.  We will cover all words throughout the unit.  The words are posted to allow for review and to help study when we have a test or quiz.
Word Study
Word study is our spelling program where the students will learn the patterns in words (ex. identifying a word ending with a vowel-constant (VC)).  The students are expected to be able to spell the word correctly and sort the word.  When the students sort the words, they are given guide words and must put words under the guide words based on the spelling patterns.  The students will receive 2 grades on their test, one for spelling the word correctly and one for putting the word under the correct guide word.  You will find your child's word study words stapled in their agenda on a piece of paper that they wrote their words on.
